SOUTH SIOUX CITY ( Buried Sioux City)-- Harold E. Knoop, 90, of South Sioux City passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 15, 2009, surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Randall Knuth officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Harold was born April 25, 1918, in Sioux City, the son of Fred and Elizabeth (Harder) Knoop. He was raised in Minnesota.

He married Florence D. Rath on Dec. 24, 1943, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sioux City. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2008. He was employed as a conservation officer for the state of Iowa for more than 20 years. He then worked for Payless Cashway until retiring at the age of 62.

He was an active sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He particularly enjoyed taking his wife and family on cross-country camping trips. He enjoyed playing music on the accordion, guitar and harmonica. He entertained at local nursing homes, parades and just getting together with friends. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and a former member of the Eagles in South Sioux City.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; two daughters, Sheryl Anne Meek of Niwot, Colo., and Lynette Kay and her husband, Joe Barker of South Sioux City; four grandchildren, Kimberly Marie and her husband, Shane Bohlke, Shauna L. and Elizabeth A. Pearson and Jesse Barker and his wife, Jennifer; many great-grandchildren; a niece who they raised, Roxanne and her husband, Daryl Daum of South Sioux City; and special friends, Earl Hem of Spring Valley, Calif., and Craig Christiansen of Lincoln, Neb.

Welcoming him to heaven are his parents, Fred and Elizabeth Knoop; and his siblings, Herman, Frank, Fred, Erick, Elsie and Marie; as well as many friends.

Pallbearers will be Craig Christiansen, Greg and Jordan Engel, Shauna Pearson, Shane Bohlke, Daryl Daum and Earl Hem. Honorary pallbearers will be Rusty Giffrow, Donald and Bobby Knoop and Jesse Barker.

His family was fortunate to have such a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and he will be greatly missed. We find comfort knowing he's at peace in a better place.
