8 April 2009SIOUX CITY -- Irving D. Sorensen, 81, of Sioux City died Monday, April 6, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Pehrson officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com .
Irv was born in Sioux City on March 1, 1928, to John and Anna Sorensen. He graduated from Central High School in 1946, then from business school. He worked enthusiastically for many years on his class reunion committee.
In 1948, he began working at United Wholesalers Inc. as a stock boy and eventually became the owner/operator of the company, a NAPA affiliate. He retired and sold the business in 1985.
He and his wife, Adele Kirkpatrick, were married on March 3, 1956, To this union, they became the parents of Kirk and Carol.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
He was a well known golfer in Sioux City and the surrounding area. He was city champion twice and won a total of 35 tournaments. He was a part of the nonprofit corporation that operated the two city public golf courses for several years.
While golf was his passion, family was his most valued treasure. He enjoyed taking family trips, going on bike rides and picnics, attending his grandchildren's activities and loved playing all sorts of games with them. He always had a smile and a good joke to share.
He is survived by his wife, Adele; two children, Kirk and his wife, Beth of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Carol and her husband, Dan Koithan of Mapleton, Iowa; and six grandchildren, David, Jeff, Ben, Eric, Alisa and Joey Koithan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Paul, Leo and Jack Sorensen.
Pallbearers will be David, Jeff, Ben and Eric Koithan, Robert DeStigter and John Wansink. Honorary pallbearers will be Alisa Koithan and Joey Koithan.
