CHEROKEE, Iowa --( Died Sioux City) Dorothy Catherine Hansen, 87, of Cherokee passed away Sunday, April 5, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Larry Lemke officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Dorothy was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Erwin, S.D., the daughter of Richard and Christina (Thomsen) Broders. She attended rural school in Danbury, Iowa, and high schools in Danbury and Battle Creek, Iowa. She attended Buena Vista University and taught in rural schools.

She married Lowell Hansen on June 5, 1944. They resided in Bryan, Texas, until Lowell left the military service. They returned to Iowa and made their home in Sac City for 20 years. They then moved to Cherokee in 1965. She furthered her education and substitute taught in the elementary grades in Cherokee. She later was a clerk for Cherokee Stationery for several years.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Women's Missionary League and taught Sunday School for many years. She also served on the Braille Committee.

One of her greatest joys in life was her family. She truly enjoyed making many chocolate chip cookies for family and friends. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing cards with neighbors and keeping up with her family's and grandchildren's activities.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Debra) Hansen of Colleyville, Texas, Marsha (Derril) Olson of Lincoln, Neb., Paula (Lowell) Smith of Aurelia, Iowa, and Bradley Hansen of Des Moines; her grandchildren, Dustin Hansen of Rosenburg, Texas, Nedra and Gabriel Hampton of Lincoln, Jacob Olson and friend, Melissa Zephier of Lincoln, Tiffany and Jason Rupp of Lenexa, Kan., Zachary Smith and friend, ReNae Patterson of Cherokee and Cassy Smith and friend, Bryan Hultman of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a great-grandchild, Gavin Hampton of Lincoln; a sister, Arlene Griesse of Escondido, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Barbara Broders of Schaller, Iowa, Wilma Hansen of Holstein, Iowa, and Norma Hansen of Omaha; a brother-in-law, Sterling Hansen and special friend, Roland Ramin of Sioux City; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell on Sept. 4, 1999; a grandson, Dallas Hansen; brothers, George and Richard Broders; brothers-in-law, Lyle Hansen, Rodney Hansen and Fred Griesse; and a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Hansen.
