SIOUX CITY -- Shirley A. Gaul, 67, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital surrounded by her loving family after a hard fought six year battle with leukemia (AML).

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dan Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Shirley was born Sept. 5, 1941, in Lake City, Minn., the daughter of Lloyd and Anne (Musolf) Kendall. She was raised in the Lake City area, graduating from Red Wing High School in Red Wing, Minn. She then attended Oliver Thine Beauty College in St. Paul, Minn.

She was united in marriage to Robert M. Gaul on Oct. 29, 1960, in Red Wing. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Le Mars, Iowa for a few years, then to Harlan, Iowa for two and one half years prior to moving to Sioux City in 1970. She worked part-time at Sunshine Grocery Cafe, Morningside Drug Store, McDonald's, then Southern Hills Hy-Vee in the deli and bakery departments.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She volunteered at the American Cancer Society Relay of Life of Siouxland. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; three daughters and seven grandchildren, Vickie Gaul and her husband, Richard Weitzner, of Rockville, Md., and their children, Aaron and Claire, Shari Tureaud and her husband, Johnny, of Dakota Dunes and their children, Dominick, Liam and Johnny, and Kim Torgerson and her husband, Eric of Phoenix, Ariz., and their children, Jordan and Peyton; four sisters, a brother, and a sister-in-law, Lois Carrels of Carmel, Ind., Bea Kendall of Yankton, S.D., Sharon Andree and her husband, Jens, of Woonsocket, S.D., Pam Sorenson and her husband, Peter, of Hastings, Minn., Duane Kendall and his wife, Sharon, of Brookings, S.D., and Joan Kendall of Hastings, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Boyd and William Kendall.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Siouxland.
