7 April 2009LAWTON, Iowa -- Samuel J. "Sam" "Shooter" Fruechtenicht, 59, of Lawton died unexpectedly Saturday, April 4, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of the Nativity in Sioux City, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Sam was born Sept. 7, 1949, in Sioux City, the son of John and Donna (Murtha) Fruechtenicht. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. He received his degree in business administration from Briar Cliff University. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He married Carol Steele on June 26, 1982, in South Sioux City. He began working for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad in 1972. He had continued to work for the railroad and was presently employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as an engineer. He also worked for Arrow Stage Lines for many years.
He was a member of Church of the Nativity and the BLE Union. He was an avid boater and a member of the Sioux City Boat Club and Ski Club. He enjoyed reading, music, traveling to the Black Hills and going to Saloon No. 10 in Deadwood, S.D. He loved animals, cooking breakfast and snow skiing. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Carol of Lawton; three children, Beau of Omaha, Clint of Lincoln, Neb., and Sabrina of Ames, Iowa; his mother, Donna Fruechtenicht of Dakota Dunes; his dogs, Shelby, Stanley and Blizzard; and his cats, Porky, Boomer and Chloe.
He was preceded in death by his father, John.
Pallbearers will be Tim Krapfl, Roger "Butch" Finnegan, Rob Finnegan, Milton Finnegan, Brian Kool and Zach Husted.
