SIOUX CITY -- Nina Hovland, 95, of Sioux City died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Pastor Dave Denzer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral Home.

Nina was born in Sioux City on March 14, 1914, the daughter of Joe and Helen (Rubis) Pilelo. She was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. She graduated from Central High School on Jan. 26, 1933.

On Jan. 17, 1942, she married Alfred Marvin Hovland in South Sioux City. Prior to her marriage, she worked at Cudahy Packing, Swift Packing and John Morrell. She co-owned and operated Jo-Nee Manufacturing Co. in Le Mars, Iowa, with her husband, where they made ladies and girls jeans. Alfred died on Jan. 7, 1977, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and of the Esther Circle at the church. She was also a member of the Russian Girls Social Club and the Railroad Auxiliary Card Group. She served as an assistant leader for Brownie Scouts and was a P.T.A. volunteer. She enjoyed doing word find puzzles, buying lottery tickets and watching the Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune. Nine loved crocheting and sewing, and she was known for her wit. What she loved most was spending time with family and friends and at her favorite Morningside McDonald's.

She is survived by her daughter and husband, Linda and Ron Trobaugh of Urbandale, Iowa; four grandchildren, Mitchell and Angie Hovland, Derek Trobaugh and Emily Arnold, Morgana and Scott Da Ros and Troy Trobaugh and his girlfriend, Heather; a daughter-in-law, Marcia Hovland; three sisters-in-law, Delores Andersen, Betty Hovland and Margaret Ann Hovland; 15 nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Esther and Bruce Trobaugh.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Dennis; and two sisters, Alice Grubel and Jennie Leonard.

A memorial has been established in her name for Morningside Lutheran Church.
