DAKOTA CITY (Buried Sioux City)-- James H. "Jim" Kempers, 56, of Dakota City passed away surrounded by his family Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at his residence after a lengthy battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at River Hills Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Kevin Roach officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today, with the family present at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mohr Funeral Home, 1000 W. 29th Street, South Sioux City. Jim was born in Le Mars, Iowa, to Kenneth and Ann (Herrmann) Kempers on Oct. 12, 1952. The family moved to Sioux City, where he attended Sioux City Schools.

He married Bonnie Heikes on Aug. 25, 1972, in Dakota City. He worked for Senftner Volkswagen for 15 years and Charlie Zook Motors for 15 years.

He liked to fish, hunt, collect coins and spend time with his family. He was a big fan of the Huskers.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of Dakota City; sons, James J. and Jesse (Cassie) Kempers of Dakota City; daughter, Bobbie (Andy) Zalme of Dakota City; grandchildren, Jacob, Jace and Jada Kempers, Tyler, Brady and Jude Zalme; a special nephew, Mikael Schnee; a special niece, Mattie Schnee; special brother-in-law, Tim and Mardi Schnee of Dakota City; brothers, Eugene (Linda), Keith (Patty) and Dwayne (Jodi) Kempers of Sioux City and Bob (Dianne) Kempers of Kingsley, Iowa; sisters, Kathy (Rick) Saunders of Sioux City and Diane (Terr) Eanes of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Susan (John) Hansen of Sioux City and DiAnne (Pam) Heikes of Houston, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Ann Kempers; in-laws, Harvey and Marty Heikes; a nephew, Mark Kempers; and a grandniece, Abby Wiskus.
