ANTHON, Iowa -- Fern Petersen, 90, formerly of Anthon, died on Friday, March 6, 2009, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery at Midway, rural Battle Creek. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa.

Grete Fern was born on May 3, 1918, to Alfred Conrad and Margrethe (Haifeldt) Kiertzner near Ida Grove, Iowa. She was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Midway, and she married Raymond Petersen in the same church on Feb. 16, 1941. While Raymond farmed and raised the cattle, Fern tended to the housework and enjoyed raising the couple's four children. She also enjoyed working with her hands, playing cards, visiting friends and family and traveling.

Fern was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Aide. She also participated on a bowling league.

Survivors left to cherish Fern's memory include a daughter, Judy Hayworth and her husband, Glen of Kingsley, Iowa; three sons, Terry Petersen and his wife, Mary Lou of Moville, Iowa, Tom Petersen and his special friend, Doreen Smith of Correctionville, and Tim Petersen and his wife, Lori of Correctionville; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Along with her husband, Raymond, who passed away on Sept. 25, 1999, Fern was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Otto; and a sister, Dorothy.
