SIOUX CITY -- LeRoy August Herbst, 34, of Des Moines, formerly of Sioux City died at his residence from complications due to diabetes.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Ralph Shorey officiating. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

LeRoy was born Oct. 27, 1974, in Sioux City, to Larry and Susan (Swanson) Herbst. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from West High School in 1993. He then attended A.I.B. in Des Moines for three years. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for several years. He then worked for Mediacom for the last six years.

He enjoyed listening to and playing music. He had his own DJ business on the side, where he played at all different kind of events. He also loved sprint car racing. He and his family always attended the Sprint Car Nationals in Knoxville, Iowa, every year. He also enjoyed watching football and was a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He loved spending time with his family and friends, but above all, he was a very proud uncle to his two nephews, Kyle and Evan.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Susan Herbst of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Dean and Cari Herbst and their boys, Kyle and Evan of Des Moines; grandmother, Ila Swanson of South Sioux City; and aunts, uncles and spouses, Gary and Orlene Herbst of Sioux City, Dale and Janelle Herbst of Sioux City, Karen and Dennis Van Auken of Sioux City, Duane and Mary Herbst of Salix, Iowa, Dennis and Judy Herbst of Bronson, Iowa, Nancy and Lee Beach of Republican City, Neb., and Rosalie and Larry Mason of Dixon, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marvin Herbst, Shirley Shaver, Darrell Shaver and Andrew Swanson.
