SERGEANT BLUFF -- Harley Mercer, 71, of Sergeant Bluff passed away Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at local care center.

There will be no service per his request. He generously donated his body to the University of Iowa Anatomy and Cell Biology Department. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff. Condolences may be sent online to lmercer@longlines.com.

Harley was born Jan. 11, 1938, in Sioux City, the son of Edward and Lucille (Hogeboom) Mercer. He attended Sergeant Bluff-Luton School and was in the class of 1956. He worked for seed mills in the south until returning to the Sioux City area in the early 1980s.

He was a good man. He was a practical joker and enjoyed the humor he brought to others. His interests included sports, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by three sons, Mark Edward and John; a daughter, Robin; a brother, Kenny; a sister, Connie; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Larry.
