4 February 2009SIOUX CITY -- Jerry Carl Sandman, 74, of Rockford, Ill., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Rockford Memorial Hospital following an accident and a brief illness.

Jerry was born July 30, 1934, in Sioux City to Henry and Katherine Sandman. He spent eight years in the U.S. Navy and served our country during the Korean conflict. He found peace and serenity at sea. He moved to Rockford in 1968 and was a proud member of the Carpenter's Local 792 for 35 years. He remained active in union activities until just shortly before his death.
He married Mary Elaine in 1972 and fondly called her Lovie and his bride.
First and foremost, he was a kind, thoughtful, loving husband and father and a caring and loyal friend. He found great pleasure in helping others and always found a way to make others smile. He loved nature, birds, flowers and the world was a brighter place due to his presence. He was a man of integrity, principles and his word. He taught his family important things, especially how to love and be loved.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Mary Elaine; a daughter, Lyn (Kermit); grandchildren, Brett (Tamara) and Traci (Mike); and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Terry.
