Raymond T. Meier, 87, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 28, 2002 at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin J. Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the 185th Fighter Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Meier was born March 10, 1915 in Crofton, Nebraska, the son of Leo T. and Clara E. (Tramp) Meier. He grew up in the Crofton area. He then served with the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 during World War II.

He married Helen F. Sherman on October 19, 1947 in Vancouver, Washington. He later made his home in Portland, Oregon, where he was an automotive electric mechanic until retiring in 1981. Mrs. Meier died July 8, 1982 in Portland.

He moved to Sioux City in 1983. He married Viola M. (Haberer) Kolls on October 29, 1983 in Sioux City.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Siouxland Senior Center. He enjoyed building and repairing clocks, woodworking and yard-work.

Survivors include his wife, Viola; four step-children and their spouses, Virginia and Kenneth McAlexander of Beacomfield, Iowa, James and Sandra Kolls of Sioux City, Robert and Penny Kolls of Kearney, Nebraska and Mary Ann and William Peter of Omaha; a brother and his wife, Gerald and Joyce Meier of Aloah, Oregon; three sister, Angela Gnirk of Tacoma, Washington, Henrietta Cunningham of Carroll, Nebraska and Mary Ann Hittle of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 12 step-grandchildren; 16 great-step-grandchildren and five great-great-step-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Pallbearers will be Timothy Kolls, David and Richard Peter, Jerry and Larry McAlexander and Bruce Collins.
