Howard G. Peterson, 74, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, August 25, 1998 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, Iowa. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport.

Mr. Peterson was born November 29, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of Olaf and Wilheminia (Grohs) Peterson. He attended Morningside College and University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He received his Bachelor of Science degree and a degree in business engineering. While at Morningside College, he was a member and captain of the football team.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and Korean War as a lieutenant. Following his discharge, he signed a contract with the National Football League’s N.Y. Giants,

He married Marilyn Krieger in 1953, in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was employed as a district manager with International Harvester Co., retiring after 34 years.

He served as Bettendorf Park Commissioner for over eight years and on the Bettendorf School Board for seven years, one year as president. He was also involved in other organizations including the Scott County Juvenile Court Services of the 7th Judicial District. In July 1998, he was honored as Bettendorf Citizen of the Year.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert of Lilburn, Georgia and Hap of Iowa City, Iowa; three daughters, Lisa Roan of Washington, Illinois, Mary Pittman of Center Point, Iowa and Ann Peterson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 12 grandchildren and two brothers, Victor and Robert, both of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Fred.

Memorials may be directed to Camp Shalom Inc. Scholarship Fund at St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Bettendorf Athletic Booster Club or Bettendorf Park and Recreational Fund.
