Former Sioux City school administrator Arthur Amundson, dies

Arthur N. Amundson, 90, of Sioux City died Thursday November 11, 1999, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Mr. Amundson was born September 25, 1910, in Boyd, Minnesota, the son of Albert and Olive (Nilsen) Amundson. He received his bachelor’s degree from Augsburg College in Minnesota, where he was named class salutatorian. While at Augsburg, he was captain of the baseball and football teams and was later named to the Augsburg Hall of Fame in both sports. He received his master’s degree from the university of Minnesota and did graduate work at Iowa State University and the University of South Dakota.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World Wart II achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. He then worked at the Veterans Administration at Iowa State University as a chief training officer.

He married Irene Shafland on April 17, 1943 in Roland, Iowa.

In 1949, he was employed as a chemistry teacher at Sioux City Central High School. He then served as assistant principal AT Central High School and West High School from 1972 to 1976.

He served as president of Sons of Norway and on the board of Lions Club and the Y.M.C.A. He was a member of First Lutheran Church.

West High School established the Arthur Amundson Scholarship Award in 1977 to recognize seniors ranking in the top 10 percent.

Survivors include his wife, a son and his wife, Dr. Stan and Dr. Pam of San Diego; a sister and her husband, Alice and Allan Kjos of Alexander, Minnesota; two granddaughters, Christina and Heidi Amundson and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Sullivan.
