Zigmund A. Chwirka, 81, of Sioux City, a former county attorney for Woodbury County, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997 at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Geelan officiating. The body was cremated. Private graveside services will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Chwirka was born September 7, 1915 in Sioux City, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Naryka) Chwirka. He graduated from East High School and Morningside College. He received his law degree from Denver University and graduated from the University of Houston Prosecutor School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Maryanne Nero on September 14, 1946 in Sioux City. She died April 1, 1993 in Sioux City.

Mr. Chwirka began his law practice in 1949 in Sioux City. He worked as an assistant county attorney for Woodbury County from 1959 to 1970, was the county attorney from 1971 to 1978, then returned to private practice.

He did lectures before civic and service clubs, peace officers and state sheriff and county attorney meetings.

He had been president of the Lawyers Club and a two-time president of the Woodbury County Peace Officers Association. He served as the secretary of the Iowa County Attorney Association.

Mr. Chwirka was a member of Blessed sacrament Catholic Church and the American Legion. He was named the Boss of the Year by the war Eagle Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association.

Survivors include two sons, Zachary and Matthew James and his wife, Terri all of Sioux City; two daughters, Mary and her husband, Ty Tadlock and Marlene Marie Chwirka, all of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Jennie and Al Uran of Sioux City and eight grandchildren, Zane, Joshua, Timothy, Matthew Jay, Jennifer and Carena Chwirka and Marissa Anne and Taylor Tadlock.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony and Joseph.
