24 March 1997Mary L. Matsushige, 51, of Sioux City died Friday, March 21, 1997 at her residence of cancer.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Indian Mission, with the Rev. F. David Titus officiating. Burial will be in Winnebago Indian Cemetery at Winnebago, Nebraska. Traditional wake services and visitation began Sunday and will continue until service time Wednesday at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Ms. Matsushige was born August 9, 1945 in Cozad, Nebraska, the daughter of Kenji and Lucy Ruth (Humphrey) Matsushige. She worked for many years in the Indian Education office, the St. Anthony Boys Home until it closed and the Wheelchair Transportation. She was a foster parent to numerous children for the past 20 years.
She attended and was a member of St. Paul’s Indian Mission and the Native American Church in Winnebago, Nebraska.
Survivors include two sons, Elden and Joshua Matsushige both of Sioux City; a daughter Linette John of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Carl and Raelyn; a special friend, Reta Lingle and her family; three foster boys, Gabriel, Jacob and Anthony; a brother and his wife, Robert and Antonia Humphrey of Wagner, South Dakota; three sisters, Susan Matsushige and Laura Williams both of Temple, Arizona and Naomi and her husband Eddie John of Mesa, Arizona and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers will be Alex and Matthew John, Lance Matsushige, Mark Humphrey, Jarvis and Eddie Horn, Mike and Eddie John, Darla Lingle, Paula Cannon and Amy Roberts.
Memorial may be given to Hospice of Siouxland.
