Janette L. Duncan, 59, of Sioux City passed away Monday, May 19, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Pehrson and brothers-in-law, Kenrad Pederson and Steve Ziebarth officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Janette was born Dec. 9, 1948, at Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, S.D., to Lesley V. and Leonore J. (Aaland) Irwin. She was raised on a farm 40 miles northeast of Mitchell. She attended Argonne Country School in Miner County, S.D., through the eighth grade. She then graduated from Howard High School in 1967, in Howard, S.D. She attended Dakota State University in Madison, S.D., from 1967 through 1971, where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and minors in special education and social sciences. She later attended Morningside College, Drake University and the University of South Dakota, working on graduate courses.

She taught for 15 years in special education and 17 years in regular education. Starting in May 1971, she subbed the fourth grade at West Monona in Onawa, Iowa. That fall, she began teaching special education at West Monona until 1978. She then began teaching at Emerson Elementary School in Sioux City from the fall of 1978 until 1992, when she moved to Lowell Elementary School, where she retired.

On July 1, 1978, she married Daniel A. Duncan in Roswell, S.D. To this union, two sons were born.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel Duncan of Sioux City; two sons, Robert Lesley Duncan and Daniel Anfelt Duncan Jr., both of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Vernon and Carol Irwin of Florissant, Mo., and Roger and Myrna Irwin of Britton, S.D.; three sisters and their husbands, Kathryn and Steve Ziebarth of Sioux Falls, S.D., Laurel and Wayne Prostrollo of Hartford, S.D., and Mary and Kenrad Pederson of Jamestown, N.D.; seven nieces; 12 nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lesley V. and Leonore J. Irwin; and twin brothers, Willard and Wendell Irwin.
