SERGEANT BLUFF -- Raymond J. "Ray" Jungwirth, 74, was carried to the arms of our Lord Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, listening to the music he loved with his children singing softly to him.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Dan Guenther officiating. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the chapel at Goodwill Industries, 3100 W. Fourth Street. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Ray grew up in Morningside, raising havoc, playing pranks and enjoying the company of his brother, Bill, and his friends, Pat Murphy, John Thibadue and Carl Angermann, as the all attended Immaculate Conception School. He graduated from there in 1948 and from East High School in 1952. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed in Germany as a radio intercept operator from 1953 to 1956. He enjoyed touring many European countries including Switzerland, France and England with his USAF buddies, many of which he remained on contact with to the end. He was officially honorably discharged in 1961.

In 1957, he married Charlene Blair, raising four children in Sioux City and Austin, Minn. He spent many years of his life as a carpenter, helping to build many homes in Morningside. He also worked as management for the Warehouse Market and Sioux City Auto Parts, ending his working career at K-Mart in Sioux Falls, S.D. In 1999, he retired to Sergeant Bluff to be close to his family.

He enjoyed telling jokes and keeping people laughing, singing country music and playing his guitar, spending time and visiting with his brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren, along with fishing with the boys and grandkids. He liked to take them rock hunting, where he always kept a few good ones in his pocket to throw on the ground for the grandkids in case there were none to be found. He was a stand-up guy and will be greatly missed by his family and too many friends to mention.

Survivors include a son, Danny and Gillian Jungwirth of Hubbard, Neb.; three daughters, Tracy and Rick Prichard, Lorrie Bohlmann and Amanda and Chad Sorensen, all of Sioux City; three sisters, Phyllis and Russell Clingenpeel of South Sioux City, Delores "Toots" Moulton and Carole and David Stokes, both of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, Kristi Gray of Tea, S.D., Raymond and Charles Jungwirth of Hubbard, Neb., Trevor and Erick Prichard, Elizabeth Bohlmann and Noah and Adden Sorensen of Sioux City; a great-granddaughter, Hallie Gray of Tea, S.D.; and his beloved cockatiels, Tweeter and Jenny.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frances Jungwirth; three brothers, Herbert, Lawrence and William Jungwirth; and two sisters, Florence Cisler and Kathryn (DeMers) Altamus.
