Elizabeth Jane (Mills) Paddock, 85, formerly of Sioux City, passed away peacefully in her sleep May 3, 2008, at her residence in Antigua, Guatemala.

Memorial services celebrating her and Bill's life together will be at a later date.

Mrs. Paddock was born July 26, 1922, to Zeller and Ruth Mills in Sioux City. She was raised in Bethany, Mo., and graduated from Bethany High School, then Iowa State University in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in home economics.

While at Iowa State University, she met William Carson Paddock, whom she married in 1944 in Bethany. Together, they had two children, Paul Mills and Ana Livingston.

After World War II, she taught home economics at Pennsylvania State University. In 1952, they moved their family down to Guatemala, where she earned the distinction of being the first licensed female pilot in Central America. The family spent four years in Guatemala, then five years in Honduras. In 1961, they relocated to Washington, D.C., where they kept a home in Georgetown until 1992. During these years, they traveled extensively and wrote a book together titled, "We Don't Know How," which addresses famine and world population growth.

She served on the boards of Federation for Immigration Reform and was a founding board member and on the steering committee for Center for Immigration Studies in Washington, D.C. She never forgot her roots and returned to Iowa every year to show her children and grandchildren her love for Iowa on her century farm, which her family homesteaded in 1850. It was here on the farm that she and Bill celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends in 1994, a weekend that will be remembered.

She is survived by her two children, Paul Mills Paddock (Anne) of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Ana Livingston Paddock of Santa Fe, N.M.; two very dear granddaughters, Lee Livingston Dolan of New York City, and Laura Lee Paddock of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mary Oster of Sun City, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, William Carson Paddock, who passed away Feb. 28, 2008.

Letters of condolences may be sent to Paddock Partnerships, 105 S. Narcissus Ave., Suite 402, West Palm Beach, FL 33401.
