17 May 2008MOVILLE, Iowa -- Donald J. "Donny Joe" Swanger, 55, of Moville passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at his residence following a long courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Morningside Assembly of God Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Lee Crum officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery, Moville. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Don was born May 5, 1953, in Sioux City, the son of Russell V. and Gertrude (Rohmiller) Swanger. He grew up on the family farm near Moville until the age of 10, when the family moved to Morningside. He attended East High School. He returned to Moville in 2004.
He was employed with I.B.P., Stone Container and Hirschbach Trucking. Before his illness, he was a contractor/distributor for the Sioux City Journal.
He was a member of Morningside Assembly of God Church. He had a lifelong love of horses and enjoyed gardening and mushroom hunting. He was envied for his hole-in-one on the fifth hole on May 5, 1993 at the Meadows in Moville.
Survivors include six children, Cherry Swanger of Beaumont, Texas, Brooklyn Swanger and his wife, Miranda of Leaguecity, Texas, Rana and her husband, Jason Sensat of Vidor, Texas, Meagan Swanger, Paige Swanger and Dona Swanger, all of Spirit Lake, Iowa; five brothers and their wives, Douglas and Sandy Swanger of Sergeant Bluff, Dennis and Kereen Swanger of Moville, Dwayne and Angie Swanger of Waterloo, Iowa, David and Theresa Swanger of Lawton, Iowa, and Dean and JoDee Swanger of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Diane Brown and Donna Swanger.
Pallbearers will be Angie Sleezer, Branda Kennedy, Eve Sanford, Ivy Prunchack, Jason Swanger, Zachary Swanger, Brian Swanger and Matthew Swanger.
Honorary pallbearers will be all of the nieces and nephews.
