18 November 2008SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Merald E. "Butch" Weber, 86, of South Sioux City, formerly of Hornick, Iowa and Dakota City, passed away Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at a local care center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joan Frenzel officiating. Burial with graveside military services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Merald E. "Butch" Weber was born Aug. 28, 1922, at home near Holly Springs, Iowa, the son of Clarence F. and Minnie C. (Unkel) Weber. He was baptized at St. John's Evangelical Church in German City on Oct. 22, 1922, was confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Church. He attended Holly Springs consolidated school, graduating in 1940.
He farmed the family farm for four years before entering the Air Corps on June 22, 1944. He was discharged from World War II on Nov. 16, 1946, at Fort Bragg, N.C. He returned to farming the family farm and the Bill and Anne Rose farm. He married Jewell Galland on Feb. 20, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cushing, Iowa. To this union a daughter, Pamela Kay and a son, Delane Curtis was born.
He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church and served on the church board for many years. He continued farming and feeding cattle and hogs. He bought the family farm and continued farming until retiring in 1987. In May of 1989 the couple moved to Dakota City where they attended the Dakota City United Methodist Church.
He was member of the Leslie Seaton Post 666 American Legion at Smithland, Iowa. He served as Post Commander and County Commander. In 2007 he was a 60-year member. He served on the board of Livestock Feeders, Woodbury County Cattleman Association and also District 12 Director of Iowa Cattleman Association. In 1997, the couple sold their home in Dakota City and moved into South Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife, Jewel; a daughter, Pamela Kendall and her special friend, Mike Lewis of Hornick; a son, Delane and his wife, Shelly of Kennewick, Wash.; three granddaughters, Jennifer and her husband, Justin Prichard, Katelyn Kendall and Heather Weber; two great-grandsons, Jaxon D. and Jarett Pritchard; a brother, Cecil and his wife, Lila of Sioux City; three nephews; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Paul Christensen; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lloyd and Minnie Galland.
Pallbearers will be Randy Rogers, Chet Claus, Justin Prichard, Mervin Weber, Bernard Hair and Jim Lane.
