17 November 2008SIOUX CITY -- Lavern L. Stodden, 81, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, at his residence with his family by his side.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Church of the Nativity. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Naval Reserve. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service, at the church.
Lavern was born on Feb. 15, 1927, near Kingsley, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 through 1946. After his discharge, he returned to this area and worked with his father driving truck and farming. He was an over-the-road driver for 35 years. After his retirement, he owned and operated L&J Lawn Service for five years. Then he and his wife owned JoAnn's Resale for 14 years.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, occasional visits to the casino, gardening, traveling, being with his children and grandchildren and especially, telling a good joke. He was a member of The Church of the Nativity, South Sioux City Eagles, Teamsters and the Boys of 68.
Lavern is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his daughter, Marcia Beeklund of Springfield, Mo.; a brother, Wayne Stodden of Sioux City; sisters, Marie Martin of Maurice, Iowa, and Donna Levwerke of Winterset, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl, Glen and Leonard; his first wife, Beverly; and a son, Ron Stodden.
