18 November 2008NORFOLK, Neb. -- Ivy E. Matney, 85, of Norfolk died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, at Faith Regional Health Services, Norfolk.
Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Norfolk, with the Rev. Jan Harris officiating. Private family inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Home For Funerals in Norfolk.
Ivy was born on Dec. 28, 1922, in Wagga Wagga, Australia, the daughter of Frederick and Eileen (Rudd) Pethick. She was raised in Australia and graduated from high school.
On Aug. 26, 1944, Ivy married Harold E. Matney in Sydney, Australia. They made their home in Crows Nest, New South Wales, Australia. In 1946, they moved to San Francisco for a short time before relocating to South Sioux City. In 1960, they purchased a grocery store in Walthill, which they operated for eight years. After selling the grocery store, they moved to Norfolk. Ivy lived in California for several years before returning to Norfolk.
Ivy was an active member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. She volunteered for many years at the hospital. She belonged to several bridge clubs, enjoyed knitting and especially reading. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in their activities.
Ivy is survived by her children, Don and Judy Matney of Memphis, Tenn., Elaine and Joe Van Ackeren of Sioux City, and daughter-in-law, Pamela Matney of Aurora, Neb.; grandchildren, Brian Matney, Tina Matney, Stacee Huffer, Jason Van Ackeren, Jeremy Van Ackeren, Becky Olsen, Christopher Matney , Sheila Matney, Mitchell Matney; a niece, Janet Wilson; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Larry; a sister, Jean; and a brother-in-law, Bill.
