SIOUX CITY -- Jo Ann Nelson Hatcher, 84, of Midland, Mich., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, in Midland.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Crescent Park United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Scott Squires officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Jo Ann was born June 8, 1924, in Zionsville, Ind., to Orval Eldon and Helen Lucille (Jones) Sweeney. She moved to Iowa as a young girl with her family. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1943.

She married Verner Nelson in 1944. He passed away in 1971.

She worked as a receptionist for Sioux City Radiological Group from 1960 until 1975. She then worked for Drs. Ziebell, Oss and Rossiter from 1976 until she retired in 1999.

She married Donald Hatcher in 2000 and they moved to Midland.

She was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church for 50-plus years. She was an avid Cubs fan. She liked Nebraska football, bowling and walking. She loved knitting and working puzzles. She loved her family most of all and was very involved with her grandchildren and their activities.

She is survived by her husband, Donald of Midland; a daughter and her husband, Nancy Ann and Evan Knapp of Cherokee, Iowa; a son, Dale Robert Nelson of Arizona; three stepchildren and their spouses, Carole and Roger Royther of Lake, Mich., David and Vasana Hatcher of Falls Church, Va., and Cathy and Michael Tikkanen of Minnetonka, Minn.; a brother, Gary Norman Baumann of Lincoln, Neb.; and three grandchildren and spouses, Sally Jo and Jason Selby of Kansas City, Mo., Sue Ann and Jared Sauer and their children, Daniel James and Ryan John Sauer of Lanark, Ill., and Kyle Robert Nelson of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Verner Nelson; and a brother, Dr. Donnis Eldon Sweeney.
