SIOUX CITY -- John D. Redick Jr., 57, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, at a hospice care facility in Des Moines, comforted by family, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Abiding by his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be noon until service time Sunday at the funeral home.

John was born April 11, 1951, in St. Cloud, Minn., to Sophie and John Redick Sr. He grew up in Brandon, Minn., where he started his career as a bridge painter and relocated to Sioux City in 1977.

Once in Sioux City, he started his family and his lengthy career in the petroleum marketing business. He was a managing partner at Sioux Harbor Truck Stop and Bulk Paint for more than 25 years. Recently, he was employed in fuel sales with Sapp Brothers Petroleum.

Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, racing and watching timeless movies. He was also a passionate animal lover, especially dogs. He enjoyed his Saturdays of watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and his Sunday watching the Minnesota Vikings. He loved his time with his family, especially his namesake and grandson, John Edward Redick IV.

He is survived by his son, John Redick III and his wife, Melissa of Des Moines; grandson, John Redick IV of Des Moines; daughter, Brookann Redick of Des Moines; a sister, Mary Redick of Kensington, Minn.; and his former wife, Cheryl Doll of Norwalk, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
