SERGEANT BLUFF -- Opal Nettie Dellwo, 80, of Sergeant Bluff passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital following a yearlong illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. today at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Opal was born Sept. 15, 1928, in rural Hornick, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Ethel Oldis. She was a graduate of the class of 1945 from Polson High School in Polson, Mont.

Opal's parents and family moved to Edmonds, Wash., in 1945, then to Peshastin, Wash., in 1946, where she met her future husband, Luke Dellwo. They were married on April 9, 1948, in Wenatchee, Wash. That same year, Luke and Opal moved back to Hornick and engaged in farming for many years. In 1974, the family moved into Sergeant Bluff.

Opal worked several years in the coffee shop at the 185th Air National Guard. She was working in the lunchroom at the Sergeant Bluff-Luton public school system when she retired. She was a 42-year member of the Sergeant Bluff American Legion Auxiliary.

Opal is survived by her husband of 60 years, Luke; three sons, Mike, Larry and Rick. Other family members left to mourn her loss are a daughter-in-law, Mary Jo; and five grandchildren, Joe, Tom, Alison and her husband, Cody Rininger, Emily and Amanda Dellwo. Another source of pride and joy were her two great-grandchildren, Cole and Avery Rininger. Opal is also survived by several nephews and nieces; and family friends, Rose Chapman, Sherae Muller and Janelle Mersch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ronald Oldis; and a sister, Marian Hansen.
