SIOUX CITY -- Chester E. "Chick" Woodley, 88, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Janice Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Chester was born May 9, 1920, in Merrill, Iowa, the son of David and Fannie (Simmons) Woodley. He grew up in the Merrill community and graduated from Merrill High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 21, 1942, at Fort Des Moines. He served in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 23, 1944. Upon his return to Sioux City, he worked as a carpenter for various builders in the area.

He married Irene Breckner on May 4, 1946, in Sioux City. To this union, five children were born.

He enjoyed golfing in Elk Point, S.D., bowling, where he scored a perfect 300, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by four daughters, Linda and Jim Olson of Sioux City, Vicki and Lonnie Beck of Minneapolis, Deb Kellen of Sioux City and Kim Keiss of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren, Rusty, Jeni, Nikki, Jamie, Stephanie, Ryan, Matthew, Breanna, Lyndsay, Jordan, Tara and Tony; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly and Warren Livengood; and a brother-in-law, Bob Lanagan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rick Woodley; nine brothers and sisters, Ora Tullis, Erma Kelly, Marjorie Eberhart, Doris Clark, Merlin Woodley, Leone Leet-Wright, Milo Woodley, Elwin Woodley and Joyce Lanagan; and two grandchildren, Courtney Greiner and Jay Keiss.

His daughters and family would like to thank everyone at Holy Spirit Retirement Home for the love, care and kindness shown to our dad and grandpa. Special thanks to Hospice of Siouxland for their support during this difficult time.
