JEFFERSON, S.D. -- George Simon, 72, of Jefferson died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at his residence.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Russell Senstad officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a time of sharing at 7 p.m., all at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.

Mr. Simon was born April 2, 1930, in Sioux City, the son of Ike and Mary (Chidu) Simon. He was raised and educated in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict.

He married Ruth Klein on March 18, 1953, in Sioux City. He worked as a carpenter for W.A. Klinger Construction Co. The couple moved to a farm near Jefferson and have resided there for the last 22 years.

He was a member of Local 948 United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ducks Unlimited and served as chairman of the South Bottoms Reunion committee. It was his hard work and determination that made the South Bottom Memorial (located on the Riverfront) a reality. He loved hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a strong supporter of conservation and was constantly pursuing it on his land.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Jefferson; a son and his wife, David and Chris Simon of Jefferson; three sisters, Mary Hickson of Sergeant Bluff, Joan and her husband, Jim Sweeney, of Sioux City and Jennie Phelps of California; three brothers and their wives, Andrew and Clara Simon of Farmington, Minn., Nick and Pemee Simon of Sioux City, and Joe and Marsha Simon of Sioux City; and three stepgrandchildren, Rusty, Tim and Matt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randy Simon; three brothers, Ike, John and Dan Simon; and two sisters, Ann Cain and Helen Morse.

Pallbearers will be Bart Bradshaw, Kevin Gardener, John Corio, Jim Walker, Steve Noel and Steve Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim West and Jerry Meisner.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or Redeemer Lutheran Church.
