Sioux City Journal
17 March 2005

Leo I. Johnson, 86, of Ash Fork, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, was taken from us the morning of March 8, 2005, surrounded by his family.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Paradise Valley, Ariz. There will be a luncheon to follow.

Mr. Johnson was born in Homer, Neb., on March 20, 1918. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European campaign. After the war, he was the ground superintendent at the Sioux City Country Club.

He married Darlene Carlson in 1952 and the two began designing and building golf courses beginning with Sun Valley and Hidden Acres in Sioux City and going all across the Midwest. They moved to Arizona in 1970 and continued with the business. He and his sons built Pepperwood in Tempe, Apache Sun in Queen Creek, the back nine at Williams Air Force Base and Vista Verde in Casa Grande. He continued designing for Marty Johnson Golf Course Builders in South Sioux City.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and El Zaribah Shrine. He was a loving father and husband and known by many friends as "one cool dude."

He is survived his wife, Darlene; three sons, Jack and Jeff of Texas, and Tim of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Roxanne Redfield and Renee Johnson of Gilbert, Ariz., and Tanya Johnson-Nies of Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Martin of South Sioux City.

He will be greatly missed.
