Vera L. Barger, 85, of Sioux City died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Riverside Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Charles Wolff and Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6 p.m, all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel.

Mrs. Barger was born Sept. 30, 1917, in Volin, S.D., the daughter of Harry and Ethel (Jamison) Johnson. She was raised in the Volin and Wakonda, S.D., area. She graduated from University of Vermillion High School.

She married James Barger on Sept. 3, 1938, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple moved to Sioux City and had lived there most of her life. She worked at the Sioux City Battery Factory during World War II, until accepting a position with Zenith Corp. from 1956 to 1969. She retired from Zenith.

She was a member of Riverside Lutheran Church since 1961. She also was a member of Rebekah Lodge. She loved to spend time with her family. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening and canning.

Survivors include her husband, James; three daughters, Joyce Peck of Hawarden, Iowa, Delores and her husband, Jim Rochester of Sioux City, and Carol and her husband, Joe Pithan of Sloan, Iowa; a son and his wife, James R. and Ruby Barger of Omaha; 14 grandchildren, Peggy Peck, Timothy Smith, Pam Peck, Penny VanderFeen, Steve Peck, Thomas Smith, Kristi Carl, Racquel Miller, Joe Pithan Jr., Cathy Peck, Tanya Miller, Mark Pithan, Emily Lambeth and Matt Pithan; 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Art Johnson and his wife, Ann of Vermillion, S.D., Virgil Johnson and his wife, Jean of Viborg, S.D., and Phillip Johnson of Centerville, S.D.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; a sister, Bette Bendert; four brothers, Raymond, Delmar, Donald and Robert Johnson; and two sons-in-law, Bernard Peck and Richard Smith.

Memorials may be directed to Riverside Lutheran Church.
