Leonard Lebowitz, 87, of Sioux City passed away Monday, July 25, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Congregation Beth Shalom, 815 38th Street, with Rabbi Guy Greene officiating. Burial will be in Independent Farene Cemetery. Following the burial, lunch will be served at Congregation Beth Shalom. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Leonard was born April 7, 1918, in Sioux City, to Israel and Sophia (Mirkin) Lebowitz. He graduated from Central High School in 1937. At the age of 12, he started his work career at Morey's Clothing Store and worked there for 25 years. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served under General Patton with the Seventh Army. The division fought in the European and African Theatres. He was discharged on Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1945.

He was the second generation owner of Soo Window Cleaners, which was founded by his dad in 1912. He operated it for 43 years until 1981, when his son, Ira, carried on the tradition until 1995. He also was in the apartment rental business for 35 years.

He was a longtime member of Shaare Zion Synagogue and Congregation Beth Shalom. He belonged to the Sioux City Country Club for many years, was a founder of the Siouxland Youth Hockey and president of the Ivre Social Club. He was an avid golfer and loved playing pitch.

He was a devoted husband, father, friend and Zaidy (grandfather in Hebrew). He will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Maxine (Falk) Lebowitz of Sioux City; a brother, Harold Lebowitz of Minneapolis; a daughter, Diane Lebowitz-Shien and her husband, Bruce Shien of Los Angeles, Calif.; a son, Jerry Lebowitz and his wife, Jackie Lebowitz of Los Angeles, Calif.; a son, Ira Lebowitz and his wife, Jessica Lebowitz of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Shealy Lebowitz of Los Angeles; and a grandson, Ari Lebowitz of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Morey Lebowitz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be sent to Congregation Beth Shalom and the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
