REMSEN, Iowa -- Eugene "Gene" Schiltz, 49, of Remsen died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Gene was born Sept. 12, 1959, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Richard and June (Boever) Schiltz. He was raised on a farm near Remsen and moved with his family into Remsen in November 1973. He received his education at St. Mary Catholic School, from which he graduated in 1978. He then worked in Orange City, Iowa at Advance Brands, in sanitation, up until his recent illness.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He liked spending time with his family and friends, driving his pick-up around and watching sports.

The ones who gratefully shared his life and are left to honor his memory are his mother, June Schiltz of Remsen; five brothers, two sisters and spouses, Gary and Mona of Craig, Iowa, Karen and Bob Fiedler of Remsen, Steve and his special friend, Miriam Carlson, of Remsen, Jim and Diana "Sam" of Casa Grande, Ariz., Mary and Randy Stoos of Remsen, Bill and Karna of Hinton, Iowa, and Doug of West Des Moines; 25 nieces and nephews; and 35 grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; and a sister-in-law, Pam Schiltz.

Pallbearers will be Gary, Steve, Jim, Bill and Doug Schiltz and Jodi Weiler. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert, Matt, Shawn, Drew and Owen Schiltz, Chad Fiedler and Jessica Tentinger.
