2 October 2008SIOUX CITY -- Irene Thompson Hubbard McAleer, 97, formerly of Sioux City slipped peacefully from this mortal life Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at the home of a step-grandson in Springville, Utah.
Services will be 11 a.m. today at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Chapel, 1201 West Clifton Ave., Sioux City. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, next to her sister, Agnes Harris Doty. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Irene Thompson Hubbard McAleer was born Feb. 16, 1911, to Martin Thompson and Mary Margaret (Johnson) in Sioux City. At the age of 11, her mother died and she moved from the city to a farming area, where she was raised by an aunt and uncle.
At the age of 15, she married Ralph Carlson and they were blessed with a son, Jack Wayne "Jackie" Carlson. The marriage ended in divorce after five years.
In 1936, she married William "Bill" David Willson Hubbard in Sioux City. She relocated to Bill's home in Baker, Mont. Bill had two children from his first marriage, Lorraine Viola and Layne Lucille. She stepped into an instant family, raising two girls along with her son, Jackie. During World War II, the couple worked as welders in a shipyard in Seattle, Wash. She would later move to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Stockton, Calif., Salt Lake City, Utah and finally to Tampa, Fla. around 1955 and later to Largo, Fla. On Aug. 28, 1965, her eternal companion, Bill passed on. Four years later to the day, she married Joseph C. McAleer and lived happily until his spirit was called home in 1985.
In 1939, she and her family joined The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was a faithful member throughout her life.
She is survived by nieces and nephews from the Thompson and Johnson families; a step-son, Joseph (Eunice) McAleer; three step-grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren from her McAleer family. On her Hubbard side, six step-grandchildren; and many great-step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jackie; her parents; her siblings; and stepdaughters, Lorraine (Vernon) Erno and Layne (Sherman) Dangerfield.
