SIOUX CITY -- Tadenz Theodore Peter "Ted" Sokolowski, 87, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at a local nursing facility.

Abiding by family wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Gary Snyder officiating. Private family graveside services will be Friday afternoon in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. A rosary at Queen of Peace will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Ted, the son of Joseph and Mary (Churo) Sokolowski, was born on a farm near Mapleton, Iowa, on Sept. 15, 1921. He graduated from Trinity Heights High School in 1941. He attended Morningside College and the College of the Pacific in San Diego.

He married Doris Linduski of Sioux City in 1941. He worked in the shipyards in Los Angeles as a welder until joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, where he trained to be a pilot and bombardier. The couple returned to Sioux City in 1945, where Ted learned the cabinetry trade and developed his skills as a home builder. This led to a business partnership with his brother, Vince Sokolowski, and good friend Kenny Nashlenas. His sons later joined him in the home construction business. He built more than 200 distinctive homes in the course of his career.

He had a long-time association with the Home Builders Association and served as president in 1983. He was involved in the planning and design of the initial layout of Queen of Peace, located on the site of his former alma mater, Trinity Heights. He contributed his considerable "green thumb" talents to the landscaping of this now nationally known shrine. He also volunteered many hours there working at the St. Joseph Center, greeting thousands of yearly visitors. He loved fishing and was an avid golfer. He led the daily noon rosary at the Cathedral of the Epiphany for many years. He was also known for his friendly harassing as he met up with friends at his favorite places, including the Milwaukee Weiner House.

He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Gary and Molly Sokolowski and Nancy and Gary Schriner, all of Sioux City and Michael and Joni Sokolowski of Sergeant Bluff; his grandchildren, Heidi Willis, Peter Sokolowski, Sandy Hernandez, Shelly Voss, Aaron Sokolowski, Kathyrn "Katie" Sokolowski and Elizabeth "Liz" Sokolowski; eight great-grandchildren; his brother and his wife, Vince and Cecilia of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Mike, John, Frank, Raymond and George; and his sisters, Sister Bernadine Sokolowski, O.S.F. and Josephine Oppelt.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Queen of Peace.

The family wishes to thank the Siouxland Center for Aging for their guidance and support this past summer and the caregivers at Indian Hills Care Center and Hospice of Siouxland for their tremendous help these past few weeks.

We will miss your Polish cuisine, rhubarb pie and friendly smile.
