Gene was born Jan. 22, 1934, in Sioux City, the son of George Irwin and Neva Rose (Elliott) Colt. He was raised in the Siouxland area. He attended and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1952. A few years later, he went to the National Business Training College. He served in the U.S. Army with the 3rd Infantry Division in Washington DC as an honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from 1957 to 1959.

After his discharge from the U.S. Army, he was employed with Knapp and Spencer until they closed. He then worked at Wincharger until the business was moved from the city. He was employed at Producer's in the office for more than 24 years. Following his retirement from Producer's, he worked as a night auditor at the Holiday Express for eight years and also at Country Inn and Suites.

He was a member of the Church of the Nativity and the Men's Club. He had many friends and they were always greeted with a smile and the latest joke he had for them. He never complained and was always willing to help out in any way he could. For several years, he volunteered with the hot lunch program at both Holy Family Epiphany and St. Boniface. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include two brothers, George R. Colt and his wife, Mary of Sioux City and Douglas Colt of Akron, Iowa; a niece, Lori Rose of Sioux City; and four nephews, Scott Colt of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Michael Colt of Akron, Iowa, Todd Colt of Akron and Mark Colt of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters-in-law, Dianna Colt and Vedean Colt.
