Daniel J. Plantenberg, 54, of Omaha, formerly of Sioux City, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be noon Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. James A. Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.

Mr. Plantenberg was born March 30, 1951, in Crofton, Neb., the son of Emil H. and Lavina E. (Hegge) Plantenberg. He graduated from Riverside High School in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He married Jeanne M. DeJong on June 5, 1971, in Sioux City. He owned and operated Dan's Bar in Hoskins, Neb., for several years. Later, he worked for Iowa Beef. More recently, he was employed with Farmland Industries in Sergeant Bluff. The couple moved to Omaha in August 2004. He was employed with C.T. Freight in Omaha at the time of his death.

His hobbies included bowling and playing cards. He was an avid fisherman. At one time he coached both baseball and basketball for several years. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne; a daughter and her husband, Joann and Ryan Dehning of Lincoln, Neb.; two sons, Jason Plantenberg of Sioux City and Tony Plantenberg and his wife, Tyra of Omaha; his parents, Emil and Lavina Plantenberg of Crofton, Neb.; five sisters, Norma Jean and her husband, Ted Colt of Sioux City, Diana Meacham of Reno, Nev., Rita Gill and her special friend, Larry Beaty of Sergeant Bluff, Marcia and her husband, Steve Gubbels of Randolph, Neb., and Lisa and her husband, Jerry Collins of Sioux City; five brothers, Norm Plantenberg and his wife, Lois of Sergeant Bluff, Merle Plantenberg and his wife, Kaye of Grand Island, Neb., Keith Plantenberg of Sioux City, Kenny Plantenberg and his wife, Patty of Crofton, Neb., and Kevin Plantenberg and his wife, Bev of Watertown, S.D.; six grandchildren, Tony, Aaron and Madison Plantenberg of Sioux City, Tyler Plantenberg of Lincoln, Neb., Morgan Dehning of Lincoln, Neb., and Korryn Plantenberg of Omaha; and numerous nieces

and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger and Donny Plantenberg; his mother-in-law, Betty Slocum; and his father-in-law, Gerard DeJong.

Pallbearers will be Mitch Van Rooyan, Brad Colt, Mark Plantenberg, Gary Plantenberg, Brian Plantenberg, Greg Meacham and Andrew Happel. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Plantenberg, Jeremy Plantenberg and Matt Plantenberg.
