SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Elvie Kiertzner, 89 of North Sioux City, formerly of South Sioux City, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Prairie States Nursing Home in Elk Point, S.D.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel Wittrock officiating. The American Legion will have a military flag presentation following the funeral service. Burial will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scriptural wake at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Kiertzner was born Nov. 13, 1916, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the son of Niels and Karoline (Martinsen) Kiertzner. He was a veteran of World War II, serving from March 11, 1942 until December 28, 1945.

He married Mary Leone Waters on June 15, 1951 in LeMars, Iowa. Elvie built and operated the original Karousel Restaurant in South Sioux City from 1965 to 1974. He also built the Sandbar and Galley Restaurant in Sioux City. Later, he became a car salesman and owned Grandpa's Discount Auto. His last employment was as owner and operator of Elvie's Chicken in South Sioux City.

He was a member of the Eagles Club in South Sioux City.

Survivors include a son, Craig Kiertzner of Yankton, S.D.; a granddaughter, Tiffeny Kiertzner of Hinton, Iowa; two sisters, Anna Jane Kellogg of Sioux City and Edith Heath of California; and a special cousin, Ruth Caracter of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary on Feb. 3, 1979, in Sioux City; two brothers, Arlo and Earl Kiertzner; and a sister, Amy Granning.
