The couple were well known for their love of animals. He served as a board member of the Humane Society and there were many occasions where they rescued cats and kittens from being euthanized when they had failed to be adopted by others. They were members of the Baptist Church.

They leave a son and his wife, Michael Lawrence and Belinda Bauer; and two grandchildren, Jon Michael Bauer and Tara Sue Bauer.
