Juanita F. Kounkel, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church, 44th and Central Street, with the Rev. David A. Schoop officiating. Private family graveside services will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be a luncheon following the service Friday at the church parish hall. Visitation with the family present will be 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Juanita Fay Hinrichs was born Dec. 12, 1921, the oldest child of Walter and Anna (Olson) Hinrichs of Hinton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. She graduated from Hinton High School as valedictorian in 1938.

She married George W. Kounkel on Aug. 29, 1939, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hinton. They resided in Leeds for most of their married life. George passed away Feb. 17, 1977.

She was employed at the Sioux City Country Club as a hostess until 1962. She worked for the Lutheran Hospital for one year. She was an employee of the city of Sioux City from 1963 until her retirement in 1986. She worked in the city treasurers office and finance department.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, participating in Bible studies, gardening, baking, traveling and camping. In her later years, she enjoyed playing cards with her friends at Northern Hills Assisted Living. She was a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church, where she participated in many church activities. She also belonged to the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and was a Lamplighter.

She will be remembered by her daughter and her husband, Lynn and Steve Fleckenstein of Hinton, Iowa; a son and his wife, Dean and Sherrill Kounkel of Fort Dodge, Iowa; four grandchildren, Cyd Fleckenstein-Hall (Matthew Hall) of Hinton, Dr. Valerie Kounkel of Grimes, Iowa, Neal Kounkel (Jill) of Greenwood, Mo., and Jody Swensen (Dan) of Clive, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Emily and Mia Hall, Jeffrey and John Kounkel and Colby and Cody Swensen; two sisters, Phyllis (Art) Franker of Olathe, Kan., and Dolores (Robert) Klingebiel of Newfane, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, James (Delores) Kounkel of Fort Ripley, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; a grandson, Mac G. Fleckenstein; and her parents.

Pallbearers will be Norman Franker, David Franker, Matthew Hall, Dan Swensen, Neal Kounkel, Wayne Dryburgh and Robert Kounkel.

Memorials may be made in her name to Calvary Lutheran Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
