3 November 2005Irene Mae Weingartner, 74, of Sioux City died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at a Sioux City assisted living facility.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Wakonda, S.D., with the Rev. Joseph T. Forcelle officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home in Sioux City. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
Irene Mae Weingartner was born Sept. 3, 1931, on the W.A. Dwyer homestead near Wakonda, Clay County, S.D. The fourth child of John H. and Ella F. (Dwyer) Weingartner, she attended rural Pleasant Valley School for eight years. She graduated from Wakonda High School in 1949.
She enrolled in Mount Mary College in Yankton, S.D., receiving her teaching certificate in 1951. She taught elementary school for 40 years in Tripp and Brookings, S.D., Sioux City, Minneapolis and Edina, Minn., retiring in 1992. She received her bachelor of science degree in education in 1960 and her master's degree in 1970 from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
After retirement, she continued to reside in Edina, Minn., where she enjoyed travel, cultural and social events until relocating to Sioux City in 2003, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2001. She had been a resident of Bickford Cottage I and II in Sioux City since April 2003.
She was a lifelong member of the Catholic church, most recently at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She was instrumental in establishing a perpetual maintenance fund for the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Wakonda. She has maintained membership in the Retired Teachers Association of Minnesota and the American Legion Auxiliary for many years.
She was always available for a helping hand to those in need and maintained life friendships with young and old and always enjoyed visiting and good humor.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary C. Weingartner of Sioux City and Lorraine E. and her husband, James McClain of Clovis, N.M.; two brothers and their wives, John J. and Myrna L. of Coverdale, Calif., and Russell W. and Sue of Helena, Mont.; 14 nieces and nephews and their families; numerous cousins; and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers will be James Morrison, Patrick Morrison, Richie Morrison, Tom Larson, Barry Peterson and Charles Denzin.
A memorial has been established for the Alzheimer's Association, Hospice of Siouxland or St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wakonda.
