PIERSON, Iowa -- Betty L. Puttmann, 86, of Pierson died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Correctionville, Iowa, with Pastor Bert Burwell, A.i.M. officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Pierson, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.

Betty was born Feb. 12, 1919, in Osage City, Kan., the daughter of Leo G. and Clara (Zabel) Johnson. She grew up in Osage City, graduating from Osage High School. After graduation she attended North Dakota Agricultural College, receiving her bachelor of science degree. She was a member of the Phi Omega Pi Sorority and a member of the rifle team. At one meet she attained a perfect score of 100 out of 100.

After graduation she met her future husband, Earle F. Puttmann, while working at the Lutheran Hospital as a medical technologist. On Sept. 12, 1943, they were married in Osage City, Kan. After their marriage they made their home on the Puttmann farm west of Pierson, Iowa, where they farmed together for 41 years. She also continued to work at the hospital while raising their family. In the early 1960s she retired from the hospital, and became a stay-at-home mom. Earle passed away on Sept. 16, 1984. After Earle's death she continued to live at home.

One of her biggest joys was having a very large garden every year. At first it was out of necessity, but after some of her children left home, she continued to raise a large garden to give away produce to family and friends. She and Earle were members of Salem Lutheran for many years, where they sang in the church choir.

Survivors include five sons, Douglas C. Puttmann and his wife, Sandy of Arlington, Wash., Stephen E. and his wife, Diana of Dell Rapids, S.D., Gregory L. and his wife, Linda, and Jeffrey W. and his wife, Patty all of Pierson, Iowa, Richard L. and his wife, Jo Ellen of Sioux City; a daughter, Carol Sue and her husband, Leonard Lensink of Sioux City; a sister, Mary Lucille Garvin; two nephews, Rick and David Garvin, all of Manhattan, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Hospice of Siouxland and Joanne Newton.
