Douglas Leslie Conklin, 77, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

There will be no local services. Following cremation, there will be a private graveside service held at a later date in Craig Cemetery, Craig, Neb. Sioux City arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Conklin was born Feb. 22, 1928, in Craig, Neb., the son of Harry "Carl" and Stella Evelyn (Cannady) Conklin. He graduated from high school in Craig. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Wayne State Teachers College and received his master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

He married Virginia Ann Gimpel on Sept. 17, 1949, in Craig. He taught at rural schools near Macy and Tekamah, Neb., for the first 11 years of his career. In the fall of 1957, the couple moved to Sioux City, where he began his career as a teacher of art. In the fall of 1960, he became the art instructor at East Junior High School, where he remained for 29 years. He retired in 1989.

For several years, he taught adult oil painting at several locations in the area, among them Sioux City and South Sioux City. He was a member of Sioux City Education Association, Iowa State Education Association and a life member of the National Educational Association. He received the Milton S. Delzell Memorial Award from the Teacher's Credit Union as well as an award from the Pigeon Roost Community Art Center in South Sioux City. His hobbies included trout fishing, traveling, painting with watercolors and following the Huskers. He especially cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; a son, Todd K. Conklin of Moville, Iowa; a daughter, Lesley Ann Conklin of Florissant, Mo.; two brothers, Jack Conklin of Wise River, Mont., and Wesley Conklin and his wife, Arlene of Fremont, Neb.; three sisters, Donna Ranta of Lincoln, Neb., Evelyn and her husband, Carol Potter of North Kansas City, Mo., and Lila and her husband, George Maslonka of Lincoln, Neb.; two grandchildren, Jordan Conklin and Mitchell Conklin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Beverly Tranmer; and two brothers, Donald Conklin and Duane Conklin.
