CUSHING, Iowa -- Ruth E. Goodburn, 87, of Cushing died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at a Blair, Neb. care center.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, with the Rev. Curtis Benson officiating. Burial will be in Cushing Cemetery. Visitation with the family present one hour prior to the services today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Holstein, Iowa.

Ruth Elizabeth Bruene was born July 18, 1918, in rural Cushing, the daughter of Rudolph and Minnie (Kabisch) Bruene. She graduated from Cushing High School in 1935, and attended Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was a rural school teacher for six years in Ida and Crawford counties in Iowa.

She married Lowell M. Goodburn on Sept. 5, 1954, in Cushing. She lived all of her life in the Cushing area. She owned and operated a reupholstery business with her niece, Myrtie Demarest, in Cushing for 30 years.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, WELCA and the American Legion Auxiliary. She taught Sunday and Bible School for many years. Her greatest passion in her later years was participating in the creation of quilts for Lutheran World Relief as a member of the Quilter's Group at St. John's.

Survivors include two sons, Carl of Blair, Neb., and Eric (Chris) of Omaha; three daughters, Joan (Joe) Robbins of Elkhorn, Neb., Mary (Randy) Isaacson of Vermillion, S.D., and Jody (Jim) Patterson of Chesapeake, Va.; a stepson, Gary (Shirley) of Cushing; a stepdaughter, Sharon (Glenn) Orr of Moore, Okla.; 12 grandchildren, Kelly, Kerry, Raylee, Douglas, Christine, Laura, Jon, Lindsey, Anna, David, Jacob and Zachary; five great-grandchildren, Kyle, Corey, Kelsey, Shane and Alexander; and nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a brother, Kenneth.
