SLOAN, Iowa -- Don Lander, 86, of Sloan died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Community Church of Christ in Sloan, with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by Masonic rites, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Services in Onawa, Iowa.

Donald Lawrence Lander was born Dec. 25, 1918, on the home farm in Sloan, the son of Luther and Eva May (Dobbs) Lander. He was raised in rural Sloan and graduated from Sloan High School in 1936. He attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1940. After graduation, he started farming in Sloan.

He married Amy Jo Durham on March 9, 1941, at the home of Amy Jo's mother in Slidell, Texas. The couple made their home in rural Sloan, where he farmed and they continued to live until 1982, when they retired to Sloan. Amy Jo passed away Jan. 28, 2004. He started a winter tax accounting business in the mid 1940s and was currently still doing taxes.

He was an avid golfer since 1970, when the Sloan Golf Course was developed and was golfing this November during the warm days. He was a member of Community Church of Christ, Attica Lodge A.F. & A.M., Sloan Golf Course and was past member of the Westwood School board.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Sally and Dan Hudek of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Joe and Mary Lander of Whiting, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jason Mertz and his wife, Tracy of Sloan, Sarah Mertz of Sioux City and Josh Lander and his wife, Mandy of Onawa, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Scott Evans of Sioux City, Jason Mertz of Sloan and Lexi and J.J. Lander of Onawa, Iowa; two sisters, Leila Inskeep of Keokuk, Iowa, and Lola Allen of Salix, Iowa; four sisters-in-law, Vivian Lander of Sun City, Ariz., Bobbie Kelly of Pasadena, Texas, Peggy Stringer and her husband, Don of Mesquite, Texas, and Martha Durham of Southlake, Texas; a brother-in-law and his wife, Ralph and Martha Durham of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Amy Jo, he was also preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Amy Lander; a grandson, Jacob "Jake" Lander; and two brothers, Fred and Arthur Lander.
