Oscar E. "O.J." Johnson, 83, of Sioux City died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 7 p.m. today at Larkin Northside Funeral Home with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps. Visitation with the family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Oscar was born July 9, 1922, in Sloan, Iowa, the son of Carroll and Grace Johnson. He was raised in Sloan and attended school there. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served during World War II. He was recalled for a short time during Korea.

He married Josephine M. Albert on Oct. 10, 1942, in Vancouver, Wa. The couple returned to Sioux City. Josephine died Feb. 15, 1999, in Sioux City.

Oscar was a truck driver, driving for several companies including Sioux Transportation. After retiring from truck driving, he was the maintenance man at the United Federal Building in Sioux City for 15 years. He retired about six years ago.

He was a member and past commander of D.A.V. Riverside Post 54. He was also a member of the local Teamsters Union 54. His hobbies included reading and studying natural herbs.

Survivors include four sons, John, Gary and his wife, Candy, Dennis and his wife, Rhonda, and Joey, all of Sioux City; five daughters, Linda Harshfield, Mary Ann Johnson and Juan Hernandez, Candy and Ron Foster, Roxanne and Dennis Christiansen and Cheryl Johnson and Rudy Velasco, all of Sioux City; 27 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine; his parents; a daughter, Diane; two grandchildren, Haylie Jo Johnson and Ryan Johnson; a son-in-law, Jeff Harshfield; three sisters and one brother.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
