Edna Mae Mathews, 78, of Sioux City, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lee Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Edna Mae was born Sept. 4, 1927, in Plymouth County, the daughter of John H. and Alma R. (Craft) Solomon. She graduated from Jefferson (S.D.) High School and attended Western Iowa Technical Community College. She had been a Sioux City resident since 1946.

She married John A. Mathews on April 27, 1945, in Elk Point. S.D. He died March 19, 2004, in Sioux City. The couple enjoyed spending 10 of their winters in Texas. She was employed by Zenith Corp. for 18 years and for Ace Dry Goods for five years. She retired in 1988. Edna also gave of her time as a caregiver to family members.

She was a long-time-active member of Whitfield United Methodist Church, the church circle and assisted with making and selling peanut brittle for the church. She also called on shut-ins for many years. She enjoyed her bridge club, Sorosis Club, crocheting and quilting. She was especially fond of her grandchildren and her new great-grandson.

Survivors include a son, Don Mathews and his wife, Barb of Sioux City; a daughter, Roxann Murphy and her husband, John of Sioux City; two brothers, Charles Solomon of Sioux City, and Darwin Solomon and his wife, Emaline of Plymouth County; a sister, Joyce Henkel and her husband, Lyle of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Chad Mathews, Bryce Mathews, Charlie Murphy, Chasidy Murphy and Katie Murphy; and a great-grandson, Dylan Olson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Darrell and Donald Solomon.

Pallbearers will be Chad Mathews, Bryce Mathews, Charlie Murphy, Randy Solomon, Bob Solomon and Dan Washburn. Honorary pallbearers will be Chasidy Murphy and Katie Murphy.
