Mary I. Shoemaker, 86, of Sioux City died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin J. Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 3 to 5 p.m. today, with a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 4 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mrs. Shoemaker was born April 26, 1918, in Salix, Iowa, the daughter of John Edward and Irene (Chartier) Hildebrand. She was raised in Salix and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1936. She then graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1939. She attended two years at Briar Cliff College, working on her bachelor of science degree.

She married Paul L. Shoemaker on Aug. 30, 1940, in Salix. The couple then moved to Sioux City. She was a registered nurse. She worked as a surgical nurse for Drs. Pierson and Honke for 28 years. She was then employed at St. Joseph Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1981.

Mr. Shoemaker passed away May 30, 1972, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America Ave Maria Court 269. She also belonged to the St. Joseph's School of Nursing Alumni Association.

Survivors include a brother and his wife, Edward and Jane Hildebrand of Billingham, Wash.; a sister, Doris Syverson of Vancouver, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers, Bernard, Russell and Vincent Hildebrand.
