SLOAN, Iowa -- Blanche E. Smith, 96, of Sioux City, formerly of Sloan, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Community Methodist Church in Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating. Inurnment will be in Sloan Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Wood Funeral Chapel in Sloan.

Blanche was born Oct. 31, 1908, in Salix, the daughter of William H. and Ida (Johnson) Eveleth. She was baptized and became a member of the Salix Methodist Church at the age of 14. She attended the Salix Public Schools, graduating in 1927. She then entered the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, graduating in 1930.

She practiced private duty nursing for a few years before marrying Harold B. "Buzz" Smith on July 22, 1939, at the Salix Methodist parsonage by the Rev. M.L. Metcalf. Harold was employed by Clark Construct Company, and some of their work took them to various military bases during World War II. They returned to the Will Eveleth farm as a partnership with Blanche caring for her mother and her father and then her husband when his health failed. Mr. Smith died Feb. 16, 1986. Blanche moved into Sloan in 1985 and to Countryside Retirement Home in 1994.

Survivors include nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Willian Hammer and Margaret Rosevear; and a brother, Laurence Johnson Eveleth.
