Alice Jean Whalen, 82, of Harmony, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004.

Services were held Dec. 23 at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony.

Alice Jean Budraka was born July 5, 1922, in Sioux City, to Joseph and Victoria (Gallas) Budraka. After graduating from East High School, she attended business college, married Lenis "L.J." Whalen on Jan. 16, 1947, and eventually moved to rural Harmony. She worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's business and was a homemaker.

Her enjoyment in life was her eight children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Catholic church's CCW, National Honor Society, American Legion Auxiliary and Arthritis Foundation.

Survivors include eight children, Jan Roelofs of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dr. Len Whalen of Zephyrhills, Fla., Ralph (Joyce) Whalen of Taipei, Taiwan, John (Ellen) Whalen of Harmony, Mary (Tim) Engesser of Spring Valley, Minn., Karen Needham of Houston, Texas, Ruth (Dave) Vaske of Le Mars, Iowa, and Laura (Dan) Thomas of Willow, Alaska; 26 grandchildren; a sister, Irene Jotzke of Sioux City; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Bob Dennehey of Sioux City, Betty Whalen of Loveland, Colo., Dean and Pat Whalen of Northglenn, Colo., Loren Armstrong of Waterloo, Iowa and Max Loya of Las Cruces, N.M.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, L.J.; a sister, Louise Loya; sisters-in-law, Sybil Dennehey, LaDonna Whalen and Emma Jo Armstrong; brothers-in-law, Adolph Jotzke, Arden, Ryan, Neil and Robert Whalen; and several nieces.
