Bernice E. Sokolovske, 87, of Sioux City died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Bickford Cottage 2 following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steven W. Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Morningside Funeral Home.

Bernice Evelyn was born Oct. 12, 1917, in Sioux City, the daughter of Benjamin and Sophie Czerkas. She was a lifelong Sioux City resident and graduated from St. Francis Grade School in Sioux City.

She married Michael Sokolovske on June 12, 1938, at St. Francis Church in Sioux City. She worked for Armour Packing for a short time. She then became a homemaker and housewife. In November 1951, the couple opened Mike's Auto Parts Store in South Sioux City. He died Dec. 9, 1974, in Sioux City. After his death, she continued to own and operate the store until her retirement in 1993.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was a volunteer for the I.C. School lunch program. She also was a member of the South Sioux City Chamber of Commerce. She loved working in her flower garden. She enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed cleaning and working around the house. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Richard and Virginia Sokolovske of Sioux City; three daughters, Carol A. and her husband, Daniel E. Flesch of Oconomowoc, Wis., the Honorable Mary Jane Sokolovske of Sioux City, and Cathy and her husband, Denny Mead of Sioux City; two sisters, Sophie O'Keefe of Sioux City, and Anne and her husband, Donald Kroeger of Reno, Nev.; nine grandchildren, Julia Licht, Michelle Sokolovske, Daniel M. Flesch, Kristin Petersen, Kimberlee Stover, Kaley Flesch, Ryan Flesch, Carrie Mead and Eric Mead; and nine great-grandchildren, Trey, Jacob and Emily Licht, Kali, Connor and Sydney Flesch, Bohdi and Niko Petersen and Caleb Baab-Flesch.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Victor Czerkas.

Pallbearers will be Peter Licht, Daniel M. Flesch, Matthew Stover, Ryan Flesch, Eric Mead and Trey Licht.

Memorials in her name will be directed to the Alzheimer's Association and Hospice of Siouxland.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to her extended family at Bickford Cottage 2.
